Ghanaian multi-disciplinary creative, Quophi Okyeame has bemoaned the lack of proper structures for songwriters in Ghana.
Quophi, a songwriter, told Showbiz A-Z host Kwame Dadzie on Joy FM that a lot of Ghanaians who write songs for others do not do so for monetary benefits.
He intimated that most of these people just revel in the fact that their songs are performed by the artistes.
He noted that in Ghana, there are no recording studios that provide split sheets for contributors of a musical works, a situations that robs most musicians off their credit and royalties.
“As we speak, you will even be happy to be given the opportunity to write for another artiste to actually perform it and promote it. So with that being the case, there is zero business if you ask me. There is nothing that I have charged so far as I am concerned for any material that I have written for anybody.
Like I am telling you, it becomes an opportunity for someone who tells you they want to write a song for you to sing," he reiterated.
The Masan Aba hit maker further explained that even though this is not the ideal situation that is what persists now in the music industry in Ghana.
He made this submission while discussing the art and business of songwriting on Showbiz A-Z. The conversation was borne out of a recent story about Kaumi Eugene calling out Mr. Drew out for not paying him after he wrote about 80% of Drew's hit song 'Case.'
The case has re-ignited the issue of systems and structures in the Ghanaian music industry.
Quophi Okyeame, a member of the defunct hiplife duo Akyeame has written songs for artistes such as Becca, Dela and Ex-Doe.
While with the AKyeame group, they produced songs including 'Di Asa', 'Bra Yen Ntena', 'Menko Meda', among others.
As a solo artiste, he has to his credit, tracks like 'Keep on Moving', 'Colo', and 'Side Chic.'
Apart from singing and rapping, Quophi is also a broadcaster, music producer, advertiser and record label owner.
