The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Youth Employment Agency (YEA), Kofi Agyepong, has announced that the government plans to reassign former tollbooth workers as District Disability Officers of the agency throughout Ghana by the end of 2023.
Approximately 800 tollbooth workers lost their jobs after the government abolished the tolls on public roads and bridges in November 2022.
The workers have accused the government of failing to fulfil its promise of providing them with alternative livelihoods or reassigning them, one year after their job loss.
Moreover, the workers claim that the government has not delivered the promised monthly allowance, as stated by the Minister for Roads and Highways, Kwasi Amoako Atta, since January 2022.
However, addressing the audience at the launch of the Business and Employment Assistance Programme (BEAP) on Monday (11 December) in Sunyani, Kofi Agyepong assured that the former toll workers would be reassigned before the end of the year.
“By the end of this year, all former tollbooth workers who were laid off after the government abolished all tolls on public roads and bridges will be re-assigned as YEA district disability officers,” Mr Agyepong said.
