Head of Public Events and Communications for Charter House, Robert Klah, has revealed the reason for the omission of the ‘Group of the Year’ in this year’s Telecel Ghana Music Awards.
According to him, the category was no longer competitive since the number of groups for nomination in that category was not enough.
Speaking with Andy Dosty on Daybreak Hitz, he stated that until the numbers for that category increase, that particular category has been put to rest.
“Group of the year again, I think that the year it was rested was because it was no longer competitive hence no category for it.”
“We are not saying it had been scrubbed off, but we are resting it until such a time we feel we have enough numbers in the space to compete for it. It is supposed to be competitive,” he said on Hitz FM.
He compared the nominees in the ‘Group of the Year’ category to the rest of the categories, saying that the particular group lacked the numbers and would tend to affect future decisions.
“Look into the nominees now and let me know if the Group of the Year is as competitive as the other categories this year. We don’t have them at the moment but if there comes a time we have the numbers, then we will have a category for it.
He, however, clarified citing an example that nomination for group of the year is not just because one is in a group.
“If we end up doing it that way, then what it means is that every year, we will have to put groups together because it has to be in a group.”
“There is no group in Ghana that is being disenfranchised from any of the categories. A group can win Artiste of the Year so it’s just an extra category to recognize groups on their own merits”, he stated.
He assured individuals that when the group becomes competitive, they will certainly be nominated.
“So if it’s no longer competitive, then at the end of the day, its resting is just so that once it assumes its competitive nature, it can be reinstituted. If not, once the decision is made, that’s all,” he said.
