The Chief Justice, Gertrude Torkornoo, has stated that the Ghanaian judiciary has always played its role in the management of the electoral process, addressing disputes related to voter registration, and parliamentary, and presidential elections.
According to her, the judiciary has also established a permanent elections management committee, chaired by a Supreme Court judge.
Speaking at the Annual Ghana Bar Association Conference in Kumasi on September 9, she said “The Supreme Court judge works actively with all relevant domestic and international organisations to respond to issues raised during and after the electoral process.”
The Chief Justice explained that the committee actively engages in training and supervising judges who handle election-related disputes, ensuring that they are well-prepared throughout the electoral cycle.
In addition, Justice Torkornoo announced the upcoming launch of a new compendium for stakeholders.
“Since 2008, the judiciary has also produced a compendium of relevant statutes and case law as a guide for stakeholders. This year it has been moved from a volume compendium to a three-volume compendium, allowing for a good sampling of the vast talk of jurisprudence that has developed from the 30 years of the fourth republic.”
“I believe we will be ready to launch it in a few weeks so that stakeholders can familiarise themselves or refresh their memories with the materials available,” she said.
