Commercial drivers are back on the road after demonstrating over a requirement to install seatbelts barring which they would not be given roadworthy certificates.
The Wednesday morning action is in protest against the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA) who say they no longer renewing roadworthy certificates of vehicles without seatbelts.
But after a meeting between their leadership of the Ghana Private Road Transport Union and top regional officials of the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, the situation has returned to normal as drivers go about their business.
It is not clear the agreement struck between the two but the news comes as a welcome relief to thousands of commuters who were stranded in the Western Regional capital of Takoradi.
Radio Max’s Francis Wajah in Takoradi reports that the drivers argue that the certificates which they say cost GHC600 to GHC700 are expensive.
They also argue that using seatbelts for every passenger including children was time-wasting.
