The National Peace Council has reaffirmed its commitment to reducing political tensions and ensuring peace during the 2024 elections.
Executive Secretary, George Amoh says the Council's Chairman will meet with Inspector General of Police, Dr George Dampare, and other key stakeholders to address the National Democratic Congress (NDC)’s planned nationwide protest.
This protest aims to pressure the Electoral Commission over concerns with the voters' register.
Mr Amoh explained that the meeting seeks to manage the situation and prevent disruptions, saying, “He has to meet with the IGP and the others regarding the current situation we have."
"We know NDC wants to go on demonstration tomorrow. We want to see how we can manage that,” he said.
The Council has also engaged with the Electoral Commission to address various concerns, including the alleged marginalisation of people from the Volta Region. As part of this effort, the Council has held dialogues in sixteen communities in the Oti and Volta regions to address these issues and engage with separatist groups.
Additionally, the Peace Council has been proactive in preventing election-related violence by consulting with political party elders, youth, women’s wings, and communicators. They have also organized Alternative Dispute Resolution (ADR) training for all political parties to help them manage internal conflicts.
To foster dialogue and build trust among political parties, the Council has set up a Political Parties Trust Building platform and a Political Parties Code of Conduct committee.
This setup allows the Council to focus on the approximately 703 cases pending in its offices nationwide.
Moreover, the Council has worked with the National Media Commission and the Danish Commission to develop guidelines aimed at reducing hate speech in the media.
