The First Deputy Speaker of Parliament, Joseph Osei-Owusu, has voiced strong disapproval of the performance and behavior of Members of Ghana's 8th Parliament.
Mr Osei-Owusu, widely known as Joe Wise, expressed frustration over the House's inability to focus on its core mandate—lawmaking—and its frequent involvement in needless controversies.
Joe Wise expressed particular concern about the diminished legislative output, stating that the 8th Parliament has not lived up to the standards set by its predecessors.
He noted that, instead of prioritising legislative duties, MPs have often engaged in unproductive disputes, which has hampered progress in lawmaking.
"I am disappointed in the eighth Parliament, generally," he said. "We have done very little in terms of legislation. If you compare the number of laws passed during the last four years with previous Parliaments, you’ll see that this has been the least productive," he said on Citi News.
He further lamented the lack of unity and civility within the House, highlighting how disagreements that could once be resolved through dialogue now frequently escalate into physical altercations.
