The New Patriotic Party (NPP) has expressed deep sorrow over the death of Akua Donkor, the Founder and Presidential Candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP).
Madam Donkor passed away on Monday, October 28 at the Ridge Hospital, Accra at the age of 72.
Akua Donkor first rose to national prominence in 2012, becoming a notable figure in Ghanaian politics despite her lack of formal education. She often communicated her political views fearlessly in the Akan language, earning widespread respect for her courage and commitment to national discourse.
Long before her national emergence, Madam Donkor had served as an Assembly Member multiple times in her community. She was also a celebrated farmer and a staunch advocate for the rights of farmers, women, and marginalized groups in society.
In a statement, the NPP described her passing as a painful loss, noting that she joins the ranks of pioneering Ghanaian women who dared to contest for the presidency, demonstrating that gender, education, or background should not limit one’s ambitions.
“…As painful as her demise is, she joins the privileged few of trailblazing Ghanaian women who defied all odds to contest for President, the highest office of the land.”
"Her life should serve as an inspiration to all Ghanaians, proving that regardless of gender, education, age, class, or religion, we can contribute meaningfully to the development of our nation," the NPP stated.
The party urged Ghanaian women to pursue greater aspirations, emphasizing that Akua Donkor’s achievements exemplify what is possible.
The NPP extended its deepest condolences to Madam Donkor’s family, especially her children, members of the Ghana Freedom Party, the people of Afigya Kwabre, and all Ghanaians mourning her loss.
“We take solace in her legacy of fearless activism and dedication to matters of our dear country and extend the NPP's deepest condolences to the bereaved family, particularly her children, members of the Ghana Freedom Party and the good people of Afigya Kwabre and all Ghanaians at large, for this great loss.”
