The Founder of the Tanko Foundation, Gabriel Kwamigah Tanko Kwabla Atokple, has reaffirmed his unwavering commitment to advancing the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through philanthropic activities.
In an exclusive interview following his sponsorship of the Duamenefa Foundation's Christmas and New Year celebrations, which benefited 1,500 patients and orphans in the Volta Region, he emphasised the significance of corporate social responsibility in fostering societal well-being.
Addressing the essence of the gesture, Mr Atokple remarked, “The diversity of having a foundation is that whatever we do must align with the United Nations SDGs. These goals address poverty, education, and hunger, among others.
"Christmas and New Year are seasons of love, and as businesspeople, it is imperative that we extend support to the less fortunate around us. Many people are deprived, and it is our responsibility to share what we have and bring them joy and comfort during these times.”
He stressed the need for society to focus on its collective humanity, saying, “Showing affection and care to those in need creates a sense of belonging. When we treat others as humans with dignity and love, we foster a more harmonious and inclusive society. These are the principles guiding the Tanko Foundation.”
The Mr Atokple also used the opportunity to urge other business leaders to contribute meaningfully to society.
“Some businessmen are already engaging in philanthropic activities within their capacities. I encourage them to continue and even expand their efforts. For those who haven’t started, it is essential to recognize that many people cannot fend for themselves, and we have the resources to make a difference. Giving back to society during times like these not only changes lives but also strengthens our communities.”
Looking ahead, the founder outlined ambitious plans for the Tanko Foundation in 2025.
“This year, we have significant projects lined up. We are partnering with organizations in the United States and Europe to implement programs targeting skill acquisition and empowerment for youth, particularly young women. By the end of April, we aim to finalize partnerships that will enable us to roll out large-scale initiatives to empower communities.”
The foundation’s focus includes training young people in practical skills to ensure they become autonomous and independent.
“Empowering our youth not only transforms their lives but also reduces the socio-economic gap in our communities. We are committed to closing this gap and creating opportunities for sustainable growth,” he added.
Touching on governance, Mr Atokple noted that empowered citizens are a foundation for a strong society.
“When individuals are equipped with skills and resources, they are better positioned to contribute to national development. My expectation is for the government to create an enabling environment for foundations like ours to thrive and make an even greater impact.”
The Tanko Foundation’s sponsorship of the Duamenefa Foundation’s yuletide celebration is a testament to its dedication to uplifting the underprivileged.
By providing food, medical supplies, and emotional support to 1,500 orphans and patients, the foundation not only brightened lives but also reinforced the importance of collaboration in addressing societal challenges.
As the Tanko Foundation gears up for a year of transformative projects, its founder’s words serve as a rallying call for all stakeholders—businesses, governments, and individuals—to join hands in creating a more equitable and compassionate world.
