Bulk importers of petroleum products have ruled out fuel shortage on the market in the coming weeks.
It follows reports that the country could soon be hit with a full national shortage due to current supply challenges and logistics issues.
However, the Chief Executive of the Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors Dr. Kweku Ofori told Joy Business the country has enough fuel to supply consumers.
“When it comes to petrol specifically, we have about two and half week’s stock. As of this morning, about 37,000 metric tons have already started discharging. From now till the end of the month, we are expecting a discharge of over 107,000 metric tons to be discharged”.
Special provisions have also been made with the regulator to use the Jetty for those who are coming with smaller vessels. So there isn't any particular problem that anyone should be worried about”, he added.
He announced that the country also has enough diesel to last almost a month at the pumps.
“Diesel, we have more than 3 weeks of stocks and we still know there are vessels at anchorage waiting to be discharged. These speculations are somehow unfortunate. I think it’s a bit unfounded for people to attribute the logistic constraints and the inadequate planning that has resulted in this to be as a result of the suspension of gold for oil.
Dr Ofori disclosed that there is enough fuel in Ghana to even supply neighbouring countries that rely on the chamber for their fuel import.
Meanwhile, the Chamber of Oil Marketing Companies (COMAC) has denied the reports suggesting that its CEO, Dr. Riverson Oppong cautioned about imminent fuel shortage.
According to the COMAC, Dr Oppong’s remarks were intended to update stakeholders on the temporary reduction in petrol stock which arose from various operational factors, including the suspension of refining activities at Sentuo Oil Refinery.
