Some political party supporters from the Ablekuma North constituency of the Greater Accra region have caused significant disruption at the Electoral Commission’s Greater Accra Regional Collation Centre, leading to the suspension of today’s collation.
JoyNews' James Klutse Avedzi says the disturbance started early on Friday morning when party supporters from the Ablekuma North constituency clashed before the EC could start the collation process.
NPP supporters arrived at the centre first, prompting the NDC to send in their supporters for protection. Tensions escalated when violence broke out, resulting in broken windows and other damaged property at the collation centre.

The NDC's Director of Elections for Ablekuma North, Daniel Tornyigah explained the party’s decision to withdraw their supporters from the scene.
“Before we arrived, the NPP supporters were already there. We couldn’t guarantee our safety with the NPP supporters and their mob. So, when all the commotion started, we felt it was best to withdraw our supporters as well,” he said.
The chaotic scene forced the EC to call off today’s collation, which was set to cover the results from three remaining polling stations to declare the winner.
The centre’s windows were shuttered and broken as a result of the clash.
The Ablekuma North constituency is the only outstanding constituency from the December 7 election without a winner due to recurring disagreements.
