President John Dramani Mahama has appointed Wisdom Kwaku Deku as the Acting Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA).
This appointment, dated 17 January 2025, signals Mr. Deku’s return to the institution after his removal in 2017 during the tenure of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) government.
The appointment letter, signed by Callistus Mahama, Secretary to the President, confirmed that Mr. Deku’s duties would begin immediately.

The letter also noted that his position remains subject to the required constitutional advice from the NIA Council in consultation with the Public Services Commission.
Mr. Deku’s return is seen as a strategic decision to revitalise the NIA and drive forward its mandate under the new administration.
His appointment aligns with President Mahama’s vision to strengthen public institutions and ensure efficient service delivery to the nation.
In response to the news, Mr. Deku expressed his gratitude in a heartfelt Facebook post.
“I am extremely grateful to President John Dramani Mahama for this recognition to serve as the Executive Secretary of the National Identification Authority (NIA). It can ONLY be God. Resetting NIA to Build the Ghana We All Want Together,” he wrote.
The appointment has been met with optimism, with stakeholders anticipating that Mr. Deku’s previous experience at the NIA will enable him to tackle the institution’s challenges effectively and advance its role in national development.
