Private legal practitioner and lecturer at the Ghana Law School, Bobby Banson, has praised the Majority Leader in Parliament, Mahama Ayariga, for his ability to control his colleagues during Thursday’s disturbances at the vetting.
Speaking on JoyNews' Newsfile with Samson Lardy Anyenini on Saturday, February 1, he said the MP’s conduct demonstrated true leadership.
"Throughout the video, for me, he was my hero. The way he was able to stand and calm everyone down, even asking his colleagues to sit and ensuring they listened to him, was impressive. I think if there was anyone who showed leadership during that 10-minute fracas, I truly tip my hat to him," he said.
The conflict in Parliament arose when the Minority side of the Appointments Committee suggested postponing the vetting of Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa and another nominee, citing fatigue. The Majority side opposed the suggestion.
The verbal confrontation later escalated into a physical altercation, resulting in the destruction of microphones and tables in the vetting room.
Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, has since suspended four MPs and set up a committee to investigate the matter.
