Deputy Majority Leader Ricketts-Hagan has criticised Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin for repeatedly questioning ministerial nominees about the National Democratic Congress (NDC) manifesto.
The exchange took place on 24th February during a ministerial vetting session, where Afenyo-Markin asked a nominee about specific commitments outlined in the NDC’s manifesto.
Ricketts-Hagan responded by dismissing the suggestion that nominees must always have the document on hand.
Addressing the Minority Leader, Ricketts-Hagan remarked, “Minority Leader, I know you are infatuated with the NDC manifesto, and that’s okay.”
“But the NDC manifesto is not like a driving license, where NDC ministerial nominees are mandated to carry it with them around and produce upon request.”
His comment drew reactions from members of both sides of the house, with some perceiving it as a light-hearted remark and others as a pointed rebuke.
The exchange highlighted ongoing tensions between the Majority and Minority in Parliament, particularly regarding the scrutiny of government policies and commitments.
While the Minority argues that ministerial nominees should be well-versed in the party’s manifesto since it forms the basis of governance, the Majority insists that governance extends beyond the contents of a single document.
