Lawyers for Daniel Asiedu, the prime suspect in the murder of former Abuakwa North MP J.B. Danquah-Adu, have informed an Accra High Court that they intend to file a bail application on March 25 for their client’s release.
Mr Asiedu also known as 'Sexy Don Don', who was acquitted by a seven-member jury in December last year, is set to undergo a retrial following a court ruling.
His legal team argues that the circumstances surrounding his acquittal warrant further legal scrutiny.
Speaking to JoyNews, the lawyers, who appeared in court with the accused person, also revealed plans to file a separate application at the Supreme Court seeking interpretation of the jury’s acquittal.
They maintain that a retrial should not proceed without clarity on the implications of the previous jury’s decision.
Background
J.B. Danquah-Adu, a former New Patriotic Party (NPP) Member of Parliament for Abuakwa North, was stabbed to death in his home in East Legon, Accra, in February 2016. Following investigations, Daniel Asiedu and an alleged accomplice, Vincent Bosso, were arrested and charged with murder and conspiracy to commit murder.
Asiedu initially pleaded guilty, claiming he acted alone, but later retracted his confession, leading to years of legal proceedings. His trial was marked by multiple adjournments and controversies, including claims of coercion and conflicting testimonies.
In December 2024, a seven-member jury acquitted Asiedu, citing insufficient evidence, but the Attorney General’s office pushed for a retrial, arguing that procedural lapses affected the outcome. The court agreed, ordering a fresh trial, a decision that Asiedu’s lawyers are now challenging.
With the bail application set for March 25 and the Supreme Court petition pending, the case continues to attract significant public and legal interest, as Ghana awaits a final resolution in one of the country’s most high-profile murder trials.
