The African journalism community is mourning the loss of a legendary voice, Shaka Ssali, the former host of Voice of America’s (VOA) popular programme “Straight Talk Africa.”
Ssali’s passing has sent shockwaves across the continent, with tributes pouring in from colleagues, friends, and admirers.
For over two decades, Shaka Ssali was a household name in Africa, known for his fearless and incisive journalism. As the host of “Straight Talk Africa,” he tackled some of the most pressing issues on the continent, from politics and corruption to social justice and human rights.
Ssali’s unique style, which blended wit, humor, and intellectual curiosity, made him a beloved figure among audiences. He had a rare ability to connect with people from all walks of life, from heads of state to ordinary citizens.
Shaka Ssali was born in Uganda and began his journalism career in the 1970s. He worked as a reporter and editor for several newspapers in Uganda before joining the Voice of America in 1994. Ssali hosted “Straight Talk Africa” from its inception in 2000 until his retirement in 2023.
Throughout his illustrious career, Shaka Ssali received numerous awards and accolades for his contributions to journalism. He was a true giant of the profession, and his legacy will continue to inspire future generations of journalists and broadcasters.
