Ghanaian fashion designer Vasty Arthur, Creative Director of Tinsel Couture, has taken the richness of Ghanaian culture to the international stage, presenting a striking collection inspired by Northern Ghana’s textile heritage at an international runway event in Kazan, Republic of Tatarstan, Russia.

Through her collection, The Pride of the North, Vasty used fashion to tell a distinctly Ghanaian story rooted in craftsmanship, identity and the generations of artisans who have preserved the country’s traditional textile heritage.

The collection was showcased at the 5th International Ethno-Fashion Festival “Lifestyle – Cultural Code,” an international gathering of designers, artisans, cultural leaders and fashion enthusiasts that celebrates fashion as an expression of living culture.

For Vasty and Tinsel Couture, the event represented more than a fashion showcase. It was an opportunity to present Ghanaian design and craftsmanship to a global audience while demonstrating how traditional textiles can be transformed into contemporary fashion with international appeal

From Northern Ghana to the World

At the heart of The Pride of the North is one of Northern Ghana’s most recognisable cultural symbols—the traditional smock, popularly known as the fugu or batakari.

Handwoven in narrow strips and carefully stitched together, the smock represents generations of craftsmanship, patience, resilience and community.

Rather than reproducing traditional garments, Vasty Arthur reinterpreted the textile for the modern runway, combining its distinctive textures and cultural significance with contemporary silhouettes and refined tailoring.
