MobileMoney Limited (MoMo), a subsidiary of MTN Ghana, has firmly denied recent social media claims suggesting that its systems were compromised due to a cybersecurity breach.
The company has reassured its customers that the MoMo platform remains safe, secure, and fully operational.
In an official statement issued on May 5, they described the viral messages as “completely misleading, untrue and, in some instances, potentially mischievous.” The false claims had urged customers to withdraw their funds, sparking public concern over the safety of mobile transactions.
"We assure all our valued customers that the cybersecurity incident has not impacted on the operation or security of our mobile money systems.
"No customers have lost any of their money as a result of the cybersecurity incident; our mobile money platform remains safe and secure, and customer funds are protected," portions of the statement noted.
According to MobileMoney LTD, the platform employs industry-standard security protocols, including end-to-end encryption, multi-factor authentication, and constant system monitoring to detect and block any fraudulent activity.
It added that the company also collaborates closely with regulators, cybersecurity professionals, and banking partners to ensure the continued protection of customer funds.
They therefore advised customers to ignore unofficial sources and to seek updates only through verified channels. The company also reminded users to stay vigilant and never share personal security details such as passwords, PINs, or one-time passwords (OTPs) through phone calls, text messages, or emails.
MTN Ghana encouraged anyone in need of assistance to contact their toll-free customer care line at 100.
