Jerry Afriyie has departed the camp of the Black Satellites to return to his club in Spain, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) confirmed on Thursday, May 8, 2025.
His departure follows a prior agreement between the GFA and his club, which required his return after Ghana’s first two matches in the ongoing U-20 Africa Cup of Nations. The arrangement became necessary as the tournament falls outside the official FIFA window for player releases.
Afriyie played a key role in Ghana’s opening fixtures, contributing significantly to the team's strong start and points tally.
While the technical team had hoped to keep him for the duration of the tournament, the GFA emphasized its commitment to upholding agreements with clubs in a spirit of mutual respect and professionalism.
The Association expressed gratitude to Afriyie for his service and wished him continued success at the club level.
“We are confident that the remaining members of the squad will build on the foundation laid in the first two matches and continue to push toward our collective objective of success in the tournament,” the FA said in their statement.
The GFA also encouraged Ghanaians to keep supporting the team as the Black Satellites push for glory in the competition.
“The GFA takes this opportunity to express our heartfelt appreciation to Jerry Afriyie for his dedication and service during his time with the national team, and we wish him continued success at his club.”
The Black Satellites will play Central African Republic in their last Group C fixture in the U-AFCON tournament today at 3:00 pm local time.
