The Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP), has proposed the creation of an independent Political Party Finance Audit Committee.
According to the OSP's Director of Strategy, Research, and Communication, Samuel Appiah Darko, this will enhance transparency in Ghana's electoral system.
Speaking at a Transparency International Ghana conference on campaign financing held in Accra on Friday, June 27, Mr Darko stressed the need to lower the financial barriers to political participation.
“Ghana should explore the creation of an independent political audit committee, similar to what exists in Norway,” he said.
He criticised the current system where the Electoral Commission serves as both regulator and overseer of political party finances, stating this arrangement compromises accountability and public confidence in the electoral process.
"This body would operate separately from the election organisers and could include representatives from the Audit Service, the OSP, and the judiciary, headed by a judge. It would leverage existing expertise and infrastructure, and operate with a dedicated budget, rather than functioning as a separate office.”
