The Republic of Gambia has reaffirmed its unwavering support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the Sahara region, endorsing the Autonomy Plan as the only credible, serious, and realistic solution to the longstanding regional dispute.
This position was reiterated in a joint communiqué issued after a meeting in Rabat between Morocco’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, African Cooperation and Moroccan Expatriates, Nasser Bourita, and Gambia’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, International Cooperation and Gambians Abroad, Sering Modou Njie.
According to the statement, Minister Njie “reaffirmed Gambia’s support for the territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Kingdom of Morocco over its entire territory, including the Sahara region,” and “reiterated the Republic of Gambia’s full support for the Moroccan Autonomy Plan.”
The Gambian foreign minister also commended the “growing international consensus, driven by King Mohammed VI,” in favour of Morocco’s position on the Sahara dispute.
He further recalled that Gambia was the first country to open a consulate general in Dakhla in January 2020, a move symbolising its enduring support for Morocco’s sovereignty over the disputed territory.
