The police has recovered a cache of weapons and ammunition from an abandoned vehicle along the Aputucagya–Bekwai Road in the Ashanti Region.
The items retrieved include one AK-47 assault rifle (Serial No. 29546), a locally manufactured firearm, two AK-47 magazines loaded with 30 rounds each, four packets of AK-47 ammunition containing 25 rounds apiece, and seven loose rounds.
Officers also found a pair of Wellington boots, a Huawei smartphone, cowrie shells, sandals, a Ghana Card, and a temporary Driver’s Licence-name withheld for investigative purposes.
In a statement issued in Kumasi and copied to the Ghana News Agency, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Godwin Atsu Ahianyo, Head of the Public Affairs Unit of the Ashanti Regional Police Command, said the discovery was made during a routine patrol by the Kuntanase District team on Sunday, August 17, 2025.
He explained that the officers spotted a white Toyota Sienna, registration number NR 289-24, suspiciously parked near a bushy stretch of the roadside.
“During the routine check, two male adults were observed standing beside the vehicle, allegedly smoking a substance suspected to be a narcotic drug,” DSP Ahianyo said.
“Upon noticing the approaching police team, the individuals fled into a nearby bush and escaped despite a pursuit by the officers,” the release added.
A subsequent search of the vehicle led to the recovery of the weapons and other items believed to suggest preparation to commit a crime.
The vehicle has since been impounded at the Kuntanase Police Station, with all items retained as exhibits to aid ongoing investigations.
DSP Ahianyo reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to curbing violent crime and safeguarding lives and property in the region.
“Members of the public with any information that could assist in the arrest of the suspects are urged to report to the nearest police station or contact the police emergency numbers: 191, 18555, or 112,” he appealed.
