Foreign Affairs Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, has announced that all Ghanaian ambassadors and diplomats will soon operate under clearly defined performance targets.
The initiative, aimed at advancing economic diplomacy, marks a historic first for the country.
Speaking at the 9th Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD-9), Minister Ablakwa revealed that the framework will be officially launched on September 1 by President John Dramani Mahama, describing it as unprecedented in Ghana’s diplomatic history.
“On the first of September, the President will be launching, for the first time ever, key performance indicators (KPIs) for all ambassadors and diplomats from the Republic of Ghana,” Ablakwa said. “This has never happened in our history.”
According to the Minister, the KPIs place economic diplomacy at the core of Ghana’s foreign policy.
Diplomats will now be tasked with driving investment, strengthening trade partnerships, and ensuring that their work directly improves the lives of Ghanaians.
“The President wants our diplomacy to make an impact. Our diplomacy must lead to improvements in the lives of people,” he stressed.
The new policy direction also signals Ghana’s commitment to positioning itself as a more attractive destination for foreign investors. Ablakwa noted that the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been mandated to ensure that diplomatic missions abroad not only promote Ghana’s interests but also create a secure and welcoming environment for investment.
“Diplomacy must promote investment, and diplomacy must create a safe haven for all of those who invest in our country,” he affirmed.
