Spatial and Land Use Planner, Dr Benedict Arkhurst, has outlined four major interventions to tackle the rising traffic congestion in Accra and other urban areas across Ghana.

Speaking on Joy FM’s Joy Sustainability Month, Dr Arkhurst noted that private vehicles account for 62 percent of all cars on Ghana’s roads, a trend he described as alarming for urban mobility.

He stressed that this over-reliance on private transport requires urgent policy action to provide sustainable alternatives.

According to him, decongestion can be achieved by strengthening the railway system, improving public bus services, developing specialised pedestrian lanes, and promoting non-motorised transport such as bicycles.

He explained that expanding rail and bus networks would give commuters reliable and affordable options, while safe pedestrian lanes and eco-friendly transport would encourage healthier, low-cost alternatives for short urban trips.

Dr Arkhurst further emphasised that these interventions must be fully integrated into existing urban planning policies to ensure long-term impact.
