The African Union Champion for Maternal and Child Health, President Samia Suluhu Hassan of Tanzania, is expected to lead a major Call to Action on Maternal, Newborn, Child and Adolescent Survival during the AU Extraordinary Summit on Universal Health Coverage in Accra.
The side event, which forms part of the summit programme, will be held in partnership with the Accra Reset and will focus on accelerating efforts to reduce preventable deaths among mothers, newborns, children and adolescents across Africa.
The AU Extraordinary Session of the Assembly of Heads of State and Government, which begins on July 21, 2026, will bring together leaders, policymakers, health experts and development partners to discuss strategies for achieving stronger and more equitable health systems on the continent.

The summit will also address critical health challenges including HIV/AIDS, tuberculosis, maternal mortality, non-communicable diseases and neglected tropical diseases.
President John Dramani Mahama, who is hosting the gathering, is expected to highlight Ghana’s healthcare reforms and investments aimed at expanding access to quality healthcare and advancing universal health coverage.

According to the President’s Spokesperson and Minister for Government Communications, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, Ghana’s hosting of the summit reflects the country’s commitment to working with African Union member states to develop practical, people-centred solutions to improve health outcomes.
The government has extended a welcome to Heads of State, delegates and stakeholders attending the summit, while reaffirming Ghana’s commitment to collaborating with partners to advance the shared goal of universal health coverage across Africa.
