Lawyer and Senior Vice President of IMANI-Africa, Kofi Bentil, has proposed the establishment of a special court staffed with legal experts to adjudicate cases of election-related violence in Ghana.
Mr Bentil made the suggestion while discussing the Kpandai election saga on JoyNews’ Newsfile on Saturday.
He argued that a dedicated judicial body would ensure the timely and impartial handling of electoral disputes, thereby strengthening public confidence in the country’s democratic processes.
"We need to go back and finish this business of the election petition court. Why can't we take 20 judges, make them election petition experts, when there is an election petition, they sit on it, draw them from the normal court, they sit on it until it is done, and the process stops at the Appeal (Court)."
According to him, such a court would provide a specialised and consistent approach to managing election-related offences, reducing delays, violence and reinforcing the rule of law. "We need to do this and avoid all these things," he said.
