Ghana Football Association President, Kwesi Nyantakyi is mooting for Ghana's football leagues to be popularised by using television. In April 2009, Optimum Media Prime (OMP) secured the television production and broadcast rights to the Glo Premier League after signing a deal worth GH¢1.7 million with the GFA for two-and-half years. This was after the FA had invited bids for the rights to the Glo Premier League in February 2009.The agreement which started with the second round of the league handed Metro TV, the television channel the rights to broadcast the domestic competition which was also viewed on other terrestrial channels including satellite broadcaster, DSTV.Live matches and highlights of the Glo Premier League which is exclusive to Metro TV, a local network and on DSTV, has limited football content on other local television networks. But the FA President believes television holds the trump card to expanding the coverage and making the league more popular.Kwesi Nyantakyi, on Friday asked television rights holders of the Glo Premier League, OMP to develop a package for the live coverage of the 2009/10 premiership with the aim of attracting other television companies.“Just as a consortium was developed for the live coverage of the recent Confederation Cup competition in South Africa, a similar one can be arranged for the coverage of the Premier League,” the FA President said during the payment GH¢100,000 to the sport body by OMP as the final tranch of the media rights fee for the league.Managing Director of OMP, Ken Ashiegbey says his company remains open to the idea of negotiating with any television station interested in covering the Premier League.Under the existing deal, the package for the next season will be GH¢600,000 and in the final year, it would jump to GH¢800,000.Source: Ghanafa.org
