Police officers at Tepa in the Ashanti Region are being investigated following a jailbreak there.
A student nurse, Ernest Owusu, 26, and a driver, Shadrach Nyame, 39, allegedly smuggled a hacksaw into their cell with which they cut the iron bars of the windows of the cell and escaped.
The two were being detained for allegedly committing criminal offences.
Ernest Owusu, the student nurse, was accused of taking various sums of money from unsuspecting persons under the guise of helping them procure admissions into nursing schools.
The driver, according to the police, stole a vehicle belonging to his employer.
The two, however, broke jail, the third jailbreak in months.
Ashanti Regional Police PRO, Mohammed Tanko, said the circumstances of the jailbreak raise questions.
He said the regional police command is furious about the incident and is determined to ensure that any police officer found to have played a role in the jailbreak will be dealt with severely.
“The police officers who were on duty have been given 10 days to get the two suspects back,” he told Joy FM’s Morning Show.
He said basic procedures such as the taking of photographs of suspects for identification purposes were not followed.
As a result of this, the police have no photographs of the suspects to help efforts to rearrest them.
“The regional command is investigating the officers on duty to find out how the hacksaw found its way into the cell,” he stressed.
Commenting on the recent spate of jailbreaks, Criminologist, Professor Ken Attafuah, said the physical integrity of the country’s cells and prisons does not meet the required standard.
“Many of our prisons and cells are old, medieval structures, with rusty, weak metal bars,” he said.
