Uncle of murdered graphic designer says police officials failed to pick emergency phone calls during the desperate moment when his 29-year-old nephew was shot dead in Kwashieman in Accra.
Nana Safo Oduro told JoyNews he "started calling the police number 191, 192 and then 1855, all were ringing [but] nobody was picking it. I had no other choice than to call the other neighbors to help me to lift him”.
There has been an outpouring of grief on social media platforms after Francis Thomas Anderson was shot dead in his home at Kwashieman in Accra last Wednesday dawn.
He was home with his pregnant wife when the incident occurred.
Grief is giving way to questions about the responsiveness of the police when crime is reported.
According to Nana Oduro, it took a call to a relative who works at the police headquarters before a team of police men came to the scene.
"We are not safe…. I think the police are doing well, but they don’t have what it takes to fight crime”, was his emphatic verdict on the police’ responsiveness.
Nana explained that the police who later came to the scene, “were not in bullet proof [vests]”, and laughed off police preparedness.
He wants Government to better equip the police service because he believes despite their commitment, a lack of logistical support undermines their sense of professionalism.
