A former assemblyman for the Nkwantanan Electoral area in Juaben in the Ashanti region has appeared before the Juaben Circuit Court for fraud.
George Opoku Amponsah has been charged for defrauding under false pretence and issuing false cheques.
The prosecutor, DSP S.S Tenkorang told the court the complainant who is a farmer has a daughter domiciled in London and owns a storey building.
In March this year, a witness in the case introduced Amponsah as a building contractor who can re-roof the storey building at Juaben at a cost of Gh16,000. After the money was paid to him, Amponsah ripped -off the roof and started fixing wooden boards on the building.
According to prosecution, the complainant lodged a complaint with the police in May this year after several attempts to get the accuse to refund the money proved futile.
In June this year, Amponsah issued two Juaben Rural Bank cheques with cheque numbers 000095 and 000096 with a face value of Gh5000 each but the complainant was told in her attempts to withdraw the money that the accused has no money in his accounts.
Police at Juaben arrested Amponsah on July 9 and charged him with the offence.
The court, presided by His Honour Benjamin Osei granted him bail to the tune of Gh20000 with one surety to be justified and appear on July 17.
The prosecution later told the court the accused has brought Gh6000 to make a part payment.
