Ghana will include Portsmouth star Kevin-Prince Boateng in their 23-man squad for the 2010 Nations Cup and hope Fifa will rubber stamp his switch to a full blown Ghana international by the time the deadline for the submission of the final squad list comes.
The Ghana Football Association have already lodged the complete documentation needed to formalise the switch with world football governing body Fifa including proof of his Ghanaian father nationality and have informed Portsmouth they intend taking their star player to the Nations Cup in Angola.
Boateng is expected to join up with the rest of the Ghana squad in Nelspruit for pre-Nations Cup camping and will face a wait similar to what Quincy Owusu-Abeyie had to endure before his switch from former Dutch youth international to Ghanaian international was confirmed by Fifa.
Abeyie’s switch was confirmed on the eve of the deadline for the 2008 Nations Cup when he was in camp with the Ghana squad in Dubai.
Boateng has already served notice of his eagerness to play in the Nations Cup even when it means he will miss many games for struggling Portsmouth.
“The Africa Cup of Nations is a massive tournament and we have the chance of winning so there is no chance of me not going. I just have to make sure we have got more points before I go there,” he said.
