A 31-year old police officer, Constable Wonder Kovey has been shot dead during a swoop on notorious criminals in the Ketu South municipality of the Volta region.
Constable Wonder Kovey had been doing some undercover investigations and returned on Thursday with intelligence that prepared security officials to swoop on the criminals.
Robbers and drug peddlers had turned Zorokpome, a suburb of Aflao, into a market where they sold stolen goods.
But during the joint military and police operation led by Wonder Kovey early Friday morning, the criminals identified the Constable and shot him on the back.
The bullet penetrated the left side of his chest, killing him instantly.
Chief Supt Ebenezer Kwaku Asare of the Regional police headquarters confirmed the tragedy to Joy News Friday.
He said with the exception of two persons he described as junkies, no arrests were made.
Chief Superintendent Asare could not immediately give details about Wonder's family background
The body of the deceased has been deposited at the Police Hospital Mortuary.
