It was ‘homecoming’ in Kumasi, as for the first time in five years, the entire management and staff of Multimedia in the Ashanti Regional capital returned to Amakom, their ‘birthplace’ (I’m told the area is actually Asem).
The occasion was a thanksgiving service to mark the 20th anniversary of Ghana’s largest private media organization, The Multimedia Group.
The venue was the Grace Baptist Church, just a walking distance from the building that housed Luv FM from 1998 when the seed of the Kumasi Business was sowed, (and later Nhyira FM) to 2010.
The rapturous applause from the congregation after the presence of the Multimedia staff in the church auditorium was announced naturally gave the delegation a feeling they were home. We were in the right place, you could sense.
Then host of Obra on Nhyira FM, Mama Efe, was invited to the podium to deliver a message on behalf of the Multimedia delegation.
She took her audience back into history on how Grace Baptist Church and its pastors have been an integral part of the Multimedia success story in Kumasi right from the beginning.
Led by then Senior Pastor, Reverend Dr. Kojo Osei-Owusu, now President of Ghana Baptist University College, the church has stood behind Luv FM and Nhyira FM through thick and thin.
Reverends Addai Smith, Nana Poku, George Owusu Mensah of ROPS fame and, presently, Reverend Robert Asante have all played key roles, both spiritually and physically, to bring the stations this far.
‘’I remember when Luv FM’s mast collapsed following a rainstorm, I was in the studio with Reverend Nana Poku at about 11 p.m. We began fervent prayer whilst we tried to reach the fire service’’, Mama Efe recounted.
‘’At the end of it all, though the mast collapsed on some houses, nobody died and nobody was injured. I believe it was through the prayer of these pastors that we came out unscathed," she concluded to spontaneous applause. "Now, I’m sure you understand the choice of Grace Baptist for the 20th-anniversary thanksgiving service was no coincidence.
Reverend Robert Asante, who hosts Grace Hour on Luv FM, paid glowing tribute to the Multimedia Group for its contribution to media development and the national economy in general.
‘’Protect them from any ‘legal entanglement’ in the performance of its constitutional duties, as a media group’’, he prayed to God.
Senior Pastor, Reverend Robert Asante prayed that God continues to bless Multimedia Group to grow stronger beyond the borders of Ghana and ‘lead the pack’ in the industry now saturated with so many players.
