Kumasi Poly may shut down as ECG disconnects power

Power supply to Kumasi Polytechnic has been disconnected as the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) demands payment of GHC3 million debt in tariffs.

The situation has brought academic work to a standstill while security has also been compromised on campus as students are exposed to armed robbery.

Authorities say they will be compelled to close down the school if the situation persists for a month.

“The situation is impacting our core business, which is teaching and learning because we do a lot of the practical based learning. Practical based learning deals with laboratory. Laboratories use electricity to function. So if there is no light there it cannot function”, said Acting Registrar of the polytechnic, Abraham Annan-Adjei.

Mr Annan-Adjei adds that administrative activities at the school has also been hard hit.

He said recording fee payments by students on computers has become impossible since the computers cannot be powered up.

Nhyira FM's Ohemeng Tawiah reports the ECG has disconnected power to the polytechnic at least three times this year.
