A group of journalism students from the University of British Columbia and their professor have been nominated for two Emmy Awards for their documentary Ghana: Digital Dumping Ground. The work by Prof. Peter Klein and 10 journalism students was named for outstanding investigative journalism and outstanding research in Thursday's release of nominations for news and documentary Emmy Awards. Ghana: Digital Dumping Ground follows the path of electronic waste from discarded computers. The students discovered hard drives in Ghana that contained information about multimillion-dollar U.S. defence contracts. Klein, a journalist and documentary maker for several U.S. networks, also was nominated for outstanding business or economic reporting for his documentary, Over a Barrel: The Truth About Oil. Three of the students involved, Leslie Young, Krysia Collyer and Jodie Martinson, have since found work with the CBC in some capacity. Other Canadians to earn a spot among the nominees include theglobeandmail.com for Behind the Veil, a multimedia series about women's lives in Afghanistan and Anvil: The Story of Anvil, a documentary about the Canadian heavy metal band Anvil by British filmmaker Sacha Gervasi. The Globe and Mail website is nominated alongside the New York Times, Reuters and San Jose Mercury News in a category for new approaches to news and documentary programming. PBS leads nominations PBS, which aired the Ghana documentary, has a leading 37 nominations for Emmy Awards for the best in TV news and documentary. Other heavy-hitters include CBS with 31 nominations, HBO with 20, National Geographic with 19 and NBC with 17. NBC earned two nominations its spot news reporting on air crashes, including its report titled "Miracle on the Hudson," about the US Airways jet that landed on the Hudson River without any loss of life, and coverage of the crash of Colgan Air Flight 3407 in Buffalo, which killed 49 people. Its competitors in the spot news category include ABC's coverage of the Nov. 5, 2009, shooting at the Fort Hood, Texas, U.S. army base, and Good Morning America's coverage of the Pittsburgh Gym Shooting. BBC World News America has two nominations in the ongoing news category for its reporting on Mexico's drug wars and Pakistan's war. Also nominated are reporting on Afghanistan by both CBS and NBC. Long news specials on the inauguration of President Barack Obama in 2009 earned Emmy nods for both NBC and ABC. CBS Evening News with Katie Couric is cited three times for its investigative reporting, include an exposé on FEMA, the U.S. Federal Emergency Management Agency, a look at Congressional spending and a story about how the U.S. justice system deals with rape. CNN has investigative reporting nominations for Gary Tuchman's reporting on a Texas town known for pulling in people on highway infractions and Abbey Boudreau's look at a Marine base that has seen an epidemic of men with breast cancer.
