President John Dramani Mahama has announced processes undertaken by government towards the exploration of oil and gas in the Keta Basin.
According to the President, an oil exploration agreement has been approved cabinet and subsequently had had parliamentary approval.
''I had the pleasure to mention to the Awamefia and the members of the Traditional Council that cabinet had approved and passed on to parliament an exploration agreement for the Swiss African Oil Company to begin exploration in the Keta basin for oil and gas.'' said President Mahama.
The President made this known when he addressed a durbar of Chiefs and people of Anlo at Keta Saturday.
The President earlier had two separate closed-door meetings with the Awamefia of Anlo at Anloga and Chiefs and Municipal/District Chief Executives of the five Municipal and District Assembly in the Anlo.
The Districts are Ketu North, Akatsi South, Akatsi North Districts, Ketu South Municipality and Keta Municipality.
The President's visit was at the request of the Awamefia, Torgbui Sri III, to update the chiefs and the people of the southern part of the Volta region on government programmes and developmental projects in the area and to also interact with the President on pressing issues in the area.
The Keta Basin has been known for oil and gas potentials for centuries but had not seen any major activity to tap the oil and gas resources of the area.
The basin is also known for mining of salt, tourism, vegetable farming and aquaculture.
