The 2014/2015 best graduating Computer Science Student, Susan Tsotso Mills, has been awarded by Computer Warehouse Group (CWG) Ghana Ltd., for her outstanding achievement.

Miss Mills’ win, came as very welcoming as she was the captain of the school’s basketball team, which means she had to combine both academia and sporting roles but still came out tops.

Currently, a teaching assistant at the Computer Science Department, Miss Mills thanked her parents and teachers for helping her get the best education and CWG for recognising her laurels and rewarding her accordingly.

“I wasn’t expecting this award. I learnt a lot but I was also very active in basketball for both the school and my hall. It was difficult combining both academia and sports but I sailed through. I will like to thank God, my parents, teachers and CWG,” she said.

Miss Mills sees her future in software development. As her project, she is working on an application that will simplify the scoring and record keeping system of the school’s basketball league. “I created a system to computerise and simplify the scoring of basketball matches in the school’s league. It can therefore keep track of player performances for years,” she added.

CWG, as part of its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) programme, has for almost half a decade now been presenting the ‘CWG Ghana Limited Prize for the Best Graduating Student in Computer Science’ at the University of Ghana.

According to CWG Ghana, the objective of the award, which encompasses a brand new laptop computer and also the prospect of employment with CWG, if the beneficiary so desired, is to encourage academic excellence.

Mrs. Harriet Yartey, Country Manager of CWG Ghana, who presented the award, said: “we nurture excellence within our system and are very particular about doing whatever we do to the best standard of excellence, the first time and at all times. The premium we place on high quality workforce explains our emphasis on quality education.”

She expounded that CWG Ghana’s CSR programmes to date have been very effective because the company do not just empower people and let them off. “We equip them; give them up-close mentoring and follow through after, to ensure that they reach the desired maturity in the end.”

CWG’s CSR programme has been ongoing since 2013 and the company’s CSR policy drive is built on two pillars namely Educational and Intellectual development.

This choice, she said, is rooted in the company’s belief that the best way to create a technologically driven society is through the support and reward for technological expertise.

In the medium to long term, CWG is looking to extend this gesture to Computer Science students from other universities in the country in the coming years. The award is replicated in all the locations where the company operates in Africa namely Nigeria, Uganda and Cameroon.

The company has also introduced a skills transfer program christened “CWG Academy” which is designed to equip fresh graduates with the required technology skills that will make them employable or become successful entrepreneurs.

The programme offers theoretical and hands-on practical training. CWG’s business scope covers a range of sectors; from banking to telecoms, government, oil & gas, services, and recently, small medium enterprises.
