An Accra High Court has denied bail to Gregory Afoko accused of murdering Upper East NPP chairman Adams Mahama in May 2015.
According to Justice Mensah, it is for the safety and the interest of justice that Gregory Afoko should remain on remand until such a time the court deems it fit to review its decision.
The High Court rejected assurances by Gregory Afoko's counsel Israel Ackah who said his client has no way of interfering with the prosecution’s case and that his client would be available any time that he is needed.
In his application for bail, counsel for Gregory Afoko stated among others that, the facts as presented by prosecution do not bring his client under the ambit of the offence of murder or conspiracy to commit murder.
But the Prosecution vehemently opposed the bail application. Mathew Amponsah argued that burns found on the clothing of the suspect tested positive for acid, the substance poured on Adams Mahama.

The late Adams Mahama
Mathew Amponsah told the court that the forensic report from the Ghana Standards Authority confirmed that the cause of the burnt portions of Gregory Afoko's clothing was acid.
He also opposed the bail application because the suspect, who is a brother of the suspended National Chairman of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), could jump bail and travel outside the country.
He also cautioned that Gregory has the potential to interfere with the police investigations.
The judge however insisted that his refusal of the bail is no license for the prosecution to unduly delay the case.
