Parliament of Ghana will on Monday, July 11 hold a public forum over the proposed Constitutional Amendment to change the voting month to November.
The forum is aimed at soliciting inputs of Ghanaians on the proposal to amend the 1992 Constitution to enable the 2016 general election to be held in November instead of December – the traditional month.
Many legislators including some Ghanaians doubted if the new date will take effect in the coming election because of the slow pace nature of the amendment procedure.
The Council of State on Monday, June 4 submitted a report to Parliament giving backing to the proposed date.
Speaking to Joynews, Vice-Chairman of the Parliament’s Legal, Constitutional and Parliamentary Affairs Committee, George Loh, said the amendment process will continue as scheduled.
He explained because the bill is of public interest the forum is expected to provide an avenue for well-meaning Ghanaians to contribute to the process.
He disclosed were it not for the limited time the House has to ensure the approval of the bill, the Committee would have sanctioned a regional tour to get more Ghanaians involved in the decision making.
“This is a bill of public interest ideally if we even have time we would have decided to do the regional tour but because of time constraint,” he said.
Nonetheless, he said: “We believe we should bring various representatives of interest groups together and discuss the bill.”
“They may have some suggestions to give but I am not too sure what suggestions they have but just as some parliamentarians raised issues, we think they should also be heard,” he said.
