The governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) has implored party faithful to keenly follow Electoral Commission (EC)’s roadmap for the deletion and re-registration of National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS) registrants.
Campaign Coordinator for the NDC 2016 elections, Kofi Adams, urged party supporters not to panic over the deletion of their names, adding, there is an opportunity to get their names back into the register.
“For those who may have been affected by the deletion of NHIS card registrants, they must make sure they follow the process that will be laid out by the Electoral Commission to get their names back in the register,” he said.
Mr Adams made this comment when he joined hundreds of NDC supporters in the Central Regional capital, Cape Coast to launch a fan club for the NDC Cape Coast South parliamentary candidate, Kwaku Rickets Hagan.
The Supreme Court (SC)’s ruling in the Abu Ramadan versus the EC case in which the court ordered the EC to rid the voters’ register of ghost names, names of minors and NHIS registrants was received with mixed feelings.
While some saw the apex court’s order asking the EC to automatically delete the list of 56,739 NHIS registrants from the electoral roll as an undue interference in the EC’s work, others believe it was necessary to instill sanity in the nation’s electoral process ahead of the November polls.
The SC directed the EC to ensure those individuals whose names would be deleted are duly informed about the action and given the opportunity to re-register.
Re-echoing the superior court’s order, Mr Adams said the EC should not forget to inform the affected individuals ahead of the deletion exercise.
“If you think Kofi Adams registered with NHIS card you must make sure Kofi Adams is informed that you are taking his name out because he used an NHIS cards,” he said.
This, Mr Adams believes is a responsibility the EC must not toy with in ensuring persons are not disenfranchised in the upcoming November general elections.
