The Assin Central Constituency Chairman of the Convention People’s Party (CPP) says he will campaign against the party in the Central Region if the party does not call back the two suspended national executives.
Paul Kaku Essien said at a news conference held Monday that the duo, National Youth Organiser, Ernesto Yeboah, and General Secretary, Nii Armah Akomfrah did no wrong to warrant the treatment meted out to them.
"How can I ask Ghanaians to vote for leaders who endorse corruption? Assin Central will not be part of this, because this is not what Ghanaians are looking for, in fact, I am ashamed,” he said.
The genesis:
In what has been described as untimely, the National Executive Committee (NEC) of the CPP suspended Ernesto Yeboah and Nii Armah Akomfrah for allegedly contradicting the position of the party’s flagbearer, Ivor Kobina Greenstreet over a Ford Expedition vehicle gifted to President John Dramani Mahama.
Joynews’ Manasseh Azure Awuni investigations revealed President Mahama was given a Ford Expedition vehicle valued at $100,000 by a Burkinabe contractor, Oumarou Djibril Kanazoe.
The findings of the investigation generated heated debate in the country with some anti-graft campaigners calling for the impeachment of the President for disregarding basic tenets regarding code of conduct of public officials contained in the 1992 Constitution and the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ) document.
Leading the Youth League of the party, Ernesto Yeboah condemned the President for receiving the gift and petitioned CHRAJ to investigate the matter to establish case of conflict of interest. The General Secretary, Nii Armah Akomfrah, had also said the President’s act was in bad taste.
Responding to a question when he took his turn at the Institute of Economic Affair (IEA)’s Evening Encounter with Presidential Candidates, Mr Greenstreet said he will not join “the bandwagon” to lampoon the President for receiving the gift.
He said there was nothing wrong with a Ford Expedition gift.
Many people were disillusioned considering his position contradicted that taken earlier by the Youth League and the General Secretary.
The party was later to accuse the two national officers of publicly commenting on the matter when the party has not taken a stand. This resulted in their suspension.
But Mr Essien has sent a stern warning to the party’s flagbearer, and National Chairman, Edmund Delle to reinstate the two officers else risk the anit-moves of the constituency executives aimed at retarding the party’s progress in the upcoming elections.
The party has chosen Mr. Asani Tano as acting General Secretary and Mr. Nabila Alhassan Bassiru to act as National Youth Organiser.
