Ghana’s electoral body has been challenged to go beyond the deletion of the over 56, 000 names it claimed were National Health Insurance (NHI) registrants on the electoral roll.
Lawyer for the plaintiffs who sued the Electoral Commission (EC) over the credibility of the register, Frank Davies, said other names which did not form part of the EC's list have to be factored.
The EC announced on Tuesday that it has deleted a total of 56,772 names of persons who registered with the NHI cards on the voters’ register in compliance with Supreme Court (SC)’s order.
Supreme Court in a case brought by a former National Youth Organiser of the People’s National Convention (PNC), Abu Ramadan and Evans Nimako over the electoral roll ruled that the register must be purged of NHIS registrants.
Many had said the EC would drag its feet as it has done in previous cases, but at an Inter-Party Advisory Committee (IPAC) with political parties on Tuesday, the EC said it has deleted the names.
It promised to publish the deleted names in national dailies and have them published on the various district offices of the Commission.
But speaking to Joynews, Frank Davies said the EC has to do more than what it has done.
“If the EC said it has deleted the 56, 772 names, what about the ones which are not found in the list?” he asked.
He has called on the various political parties to aid the Commission in deleting the remaining names from the register.
This he disclosed has to be tactically done to safeguard the credibility of general elections.
