Mobile telecommunication giant, MTN has agreed with the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) to offer stable and stronger internet connectivity for the school.
The five-year commercial contract which is worth in excess of GH¢3 million will run from this year till 2020.
It includes laying and construction of Fiber Optic Cables, new MTN Cells sites and wifi access to boost connectivity on campus including all 16 halls on campus.
Six traditional halls of the university were supported by one of the company’s Ericsson will access MTN services free of charge as part of MTN’s corporate social responsibility program.
Senior Manager, ICT Sales and Business Development at the Enterprise Division of MTN, Daniel Asare, says with the connectivity, one can access the internet from the comfort of their respective halls of residences.
“In the past, the solution they [KNUST] were using was not that efficient so the students pay but they don’t get access. What this has done is to bring the internet closer to them [students and staff].”
KNUST Vice Chancellor, Professor William Otoo Ellis says issues concerning the internet was a base to signing the agreement.
According to him, it will enhance the core business with respect to teaching, research and service to the community.
“There is a clear understanding between the university and MTN and we hope that we can continue to build upon this platform as we move ahead.” He said.
