Nigeria-based cement manufacturing company, Dangote has backed the Import and Export Regulations Bill expected to mature on Friday.

Importers of the product outside the ECOWAS region will from August 5, be required by law to apply for a renewable license to operate.

There have since been fears among some customers Ghana could return to the days of shortages on the market as Dangote Cement is also a major importer of the product.

But Media Relations Manager Etornam Komla Buami tell Joy Business all its cement products are imported from Nigeria which is in the ECOWAS Sub-region.

"Dangote has supported this move long ago and through the terms of discussions we have already make inputs it. Our point has always been that for the cement industry to strive well in Ghana, it is important that some regulation is brought into the system" Mr Buami said.

He said a lot of inferior cement is being imported from China onto the Ghanaian market which is not good for the construction industry.

According to him, the new Bill does not affect Dangote and assures people that they are in active business and bagging the cement from Tema factory.

"All those who were panicking earlier in the day as a result of this news should be rest assured that Dangote cement is here to stay and we are working hard to ensure that our Takoradi plant comes on board by the end of next year," he said.

The restrictions, contained in the Import and Export Regulations Bill which matures this week will see bagging of cement not produced in the country also embargoed.
