Communications Director of the Convention People's Party (CPP), Abdul Kadir, says the current infighting in the party has nothing to do with a clash of egos among national officers.
“What is currently happening in the CPP is absolutely nothing but a struggle of good over evil. A struggle of how to make the Constitution and the party supreme over individual views,” he told Nana Ansah Kwao IV, host of MultiTV’s news analysis programme PM Express.
CPP made the news when its Central Committee (CC) suspended the party’s General Secretary, Nii Armah Akomfrah and National Youth Organiser, Ernesto Kofi Yeboah on grounds of alleged misdemeanor in July.
They were accused of contradicting the position of the party’s Presidential Candidate, Ivor Kobina Greenstreet in a matter in which President Mahama is said to have recieved a Ford Expedition gift valued at $100,000 from a Burkinabe contractor, Djibril Kanazoe.
This followed Joynews’ Manassesh Azure Awuni’s expose about the relationship between the Ghanaian leader and the Burkinabe contractor who does business with government.
Messrs Akomfrah and Yeboah condemned the President for receiving the gift and called for an investigation to be instituted to establish the case of conflict of interest – a situation the 1992 Constitution condemns.
Mr Greenstreet says President Mahama did not err in receiving the gift, adding, he would not join the section of Ghanaians condemning the President.

The duo were later suspended after a CC meeting. However, the party’s Disciplinary Committee (DC) which sat on the case absolved the two of all the charges leveled against them and recommended the party reinstate them. The party is adamant saying the DC did a shoddy work with the investigation.
The party’s standard bearer and Chairman, Professor Edmund Delle have been widely criticised for allowing the skirmishes in the party to fester barely five months to the 2016 general election.
But Mr Kadir said the decision by the CC to suspend the duo was borne out of the many untoward acts perpetuated by them.
He said the two men have breached the Constitution of the party and therefore have to face the consequences.
The CC is maintaining the supremacy of the Constitution and party over and above the sectional individuals in the party, he said.
Contributing to the programme, Political Science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Dr Edmund Brenya berated CPP leadership for the bad news in the media.
“There is a problem with the leadership of the CPP, a problem if not well addressed will affect the fortunes of the party to become at least a third force in the country,” he said.
According to him, a party seeking the mandate of Ghanaians should give way for problems to erupt within its structures, adding, Professor Delle and Mr Greenstreet should make amends before December 7.
