Government has secured a loan from British bank, HSBC for the upgrade of the Obetsebi Lamptey roundabout into a modern interchange.
Out of the $39 million secured, Parliament has approved $17 million for the first phase of the project.
About 50 thousand vehicles ply the stretch from the central and western regions, Joy News has learnt.
The road, when upgraded will also help reduce the annual flooding situation in that part of the city.
Chairman of the road and transport committee, Theophilus Tetteh Chaie said the upgrade will complement the circle interchange when completed.
“When the circle interchange is completed, what will happen is that there will be free flow of traffic from the that area and that will make vehicles move faster to that area and it is going to create more congestion.
“So we, as part of our recommendation did indicate to government that to enhance the circle project, the Obtestebi Lamptey circle needs to be done.”
Mr Tetteh Chaie said he is happy that government heeded to the recommendations of the technical team including the committee.
The first phase of the project will link the Kaneshie market to the CDD road with a loop to the Kwame Nkrumah circle area.
The single lane roads will be upgraded to dual, the others will be turned into three lane roads.
