The Progressive People’s Party (PPP) has reiterated its determination to win the 2016 election by flying on the wings of its social media support.
PPP Communication Director, Paa Kwao Ackon, says the party has a large following on social media and would convert that to win the election.
“Until recently, a lot of people have been complaining about not receiving our messages when we send letters but now with the use of WhatsApp, we are able to reach our people,” he told Nhyira Addo, host of Joy FM’s Super Morning Show Tuesday.
Social media have been the focus of discussion in Ghana recently. Whereas the sections of Ghanaians believe social media platforms have been helpful, others hold a contrary view.
Inspector-General of Ghana Police, John Kudalor, has revealed the police administration was considering banning the use of social media on December 7.
However, this was sharply contradicted by President John Mahama who told Ghanaians on Sunday, August 14 during the launch of NDC 2016 campaign that government has no intention of banning social media on the Election Day.
Statistics have it that from 2015 to July 2016 internet penetration in Ghana has reached 7.94 million out of which over 2.9 million Ghanaians using Facebook.
At least 3.9 million Ghanaians are using Twitter followed by 0.18 percent Ghanaians using Google+, 0.6 percent on Pinterest, 0.08 percent YouTube, 0.02 percent on reedit and the others, 0.01 percent.
Mr Ackon has said the benefits of social media to the PPP are immense including affording the party the opportunity to reach more of their followers using Facebook and WhatsApp.
“The party will make use of the youth segment age 18-35 years who will be voting,” he said, adding, their success on social media as a party is being studied at the University of Ghana.
The Deputy Greater Regional Youth Organizer of the governing National Democratic Congress (NDC) says they are using social media to ensure a second term bid to the President.
Ndudzi Tamakloe says they keenly use social media to elicit feedback regarding the achievements of the President John Mahama. “Once we are on social media, it gives us a certain feedback”.
