The founder of the International God’s Way Church says the lashing he gave to his two children before his church is in conformity with the Christian teaching.
Bishop Daniel Obinim quoted Proverbs 13: “He that spareth his rod hateth his son: but he that loveth him chasteneth him betimes” [King James Version] to defend his action.
“These children are staying with us and because of our job we have been traveling. They had an affair resulting in a pregnancy and the girl decided to take concoction to abort the pregnancy. What would have happened if she had died out of that?” he asked in an audio released Thursday.
A video showing the controversial pastor lashing two adults with his belt in front of his congregants for allegedly having an affair resulting in pregnancy has gone viral on social media for days now.
In the video, Bishop Obinim was seen wielding his belt and giving the gentleman 10 lashes and the lady 15 lashes in his bid to instill discipline in them.
Ghanaians have expressed their disappointment in the action of the Bishop.
A member of the Association of Concerned Clergy Men (ACCM) said the action of the man of God amounts to an assault which is punishable by laws of the country.
Bishop Benny Wood told Dzifa Bampoh, host of Joy FM’s Newsnite programme that Bishop Obinim’s action does not conform to the ethics of Christianity.
“We have laws in the Bible that were used in the church and homes [but] the church is a place to train people to believe in God. By what he did he is exhibiting his lack of understanding of the scripture,” he said.
The Bible says if a blind man leads another blind man they will all end up in the ditch, he added.
But reacting to the angst of Ghanaians, Bishop Obinim said as the guardian of the teenagers, he has the right to discipline them.
He entreated Ghanaians to focus on what he would be accused of had the girl been harmed by the concoction.
“I was having a service in Accra when Jesus Christ opened my eyes to what they had done. What would I say to her parents?” he quizzed.
Meanwhile, the Gender Minister posted on Facebook:
"The Ministry of Gender Children and Social Protection has reported Pastor Obinim of International Godsway Church to the Accra Regional DOVVSU Office for investigation. We have been informed, that the Police has commenced investigations into the matter and a complaint has also been filed against him at the Tema Regional Police. We will keep you posted on further developments."
Communications aide at the Ministry, Robert Akoto Amoafo, told Joy News, the Ministry will not hesitate to ensure Bishop Obinim faces the law.
