Police at Peki-Opokuase barrier in the Volta Region on Sunday intercepted a truck loaded with 72 mini bags of coffee believed to be from Kwawu Bepong in the Eastern Region en-route through Hohoe to Togo.
Assistant Commissioner of Police David Nenyi Ampah-Bennin, the Volta Regional Police Commander, told journalists that the suspicion of the police was aroused when Emmanuel Bawuah, 23, the driver of the truck and his accomplice Suleman Kumada, failed to produce a waybill and other documents to support the goods.
He said police were also unable to locate addresses given by the suspects as the source of the coffee and had kept the suspects in custody to help investigations.
Mr Ampah-Bennin said the Regional Police Command had information of people stealing coffee and cocoa from the Tema harbour and smuggling them to neighbouring countries and that personnel of the Service had been well briefed to be extra vigilant for such cases.
He said Kumada claimed to be an agent of L&D and Sons Coffee Company Limited in Hohoe and that the goods were meant for his employers but Mr Ampah-Bennin said "it is unusual for bags of coffee to be brought to Hohoe instead of Tema harbour."
