A Circuit Court in Accra on Monday sentenced an 18-year-old cobbler, Kwadwo Opoku to eight years imprisonment for defiling a four-year-old girl.
This was after Opoku had pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement and the court presided over by Mrs Georgina Mensah-Datsa convicted him on his own plea.
The prosecutor, Police Inspector I.A.A. Ahor, told the court that the complainant was the victim's aunt and they lived together in the same vicinity at Apenkwa, a suburb of Accra.
On January 7, this year, at about 1600 hours the victim's aunt realised that she could not be found.
After enquiring from the victim's colleagues, one of them informed her (complainant) that Opoku had taken her to an uncompleted house near their residence.
The victim's colleague led the complainant to the place where they heard the victim crying in a room, and when the door to the room was forced open by the complainant, Opoku and victim were found naked with the victim sitting on Opoku's lap.
The prosecutor said when the victim was interrogated, she told the complainant that Opoku had inserted his penis into her vagina.
Inspector Ahor said the complaint informed the Domestic Violence and Victims Support Unit (DOVVSU), at Tesano Police Station and Opoku was arrested.
A medical form was issued to the complainant to send the victim to the hospital for examination and treatment, and after investigations Opoku was charged with the offence.
In another development, the court sentenced a 49-year-old carpenter to eight years imprisonment for defiling a 12-year-old pupil.
David Ashie Amon, pleaded guilty to the charge of defilement and the court convicted him accordingly.
Inspector Ahor said the victim lived with her father at Korle Gonno, a suburb in Accra.
According to the prosecutor, Amon lived in the same area with the victim.
Inspector Ahor said sometime in December 2010, Amon had sexual intercourse with the victim in his room on three occasions and that the last sexual act took place on December 30, 2010.
After the act, the prosecutor said Amon warned the victim not to disclose the act to anyone.
However, during the early part of January, this year, the victim disclosed the ordeal to her school authorities.
The prosecutor said on January 7, this year, the authorities of victim's school invited her father and informed him about the sexual act.
A report was lodged with the Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), in the Greater Accra Region and the victim was issued with a medical report to visit the hospital where she was treated and discharged.
Amon was subsequently arrested and put before court.
